Being part of Rensselaer Global Medical Brigades gives students the opportunity to be part of the largest student-led social responsibility movement on the planet. Providing medical care via our mobile medical clinic reduces the need for patients in rural communities to walk hours, or even days, for common medical check-ups, necessary vaccinations, and emergency visits. It is estimated that for every Global Brigade volunteer, twenty-four people receive access to medical care. Access to medical care leads to healthier, more productive lives, and positively impacts overall economic potential, sanitation, hygiene, and future health. While this brigade changes the lives of the patients we treat, there is just as large of an impact on the Rensselaer students who participate in the brigade.
Students who participate in the brigades come back speaking of life-changing experiences. Our organization broadens students’ world view in a way that will influence them for the rest of their lives. Their experiences will change how they view healthcare around the world as well as here at home. The effect of membership in this organization does not end with the student, but builds pride in the Rensselaer motto: “Why not change the world?” RPI Global Medical Brigades shows RPI students and the world that our institute is a place where action is taken every day to cause change. RPI Global Medical Brigades members selflessly help others and cultivate the life experiences that help make us the cultured and well-rounded professionals we aspire to be.
RPI Global Medical Brigades is the only organization on campus that gives students the opportunity to travel abroad and participate first-hand in healthcare and infrastructure development projects in a way that would be impossible in the United States.
