Global Medical Brigades 2017

Adventure. Inspire. Empower.

“Working with Global Medical Brigades has been one of the most worthwhile experiences of my Rensselaer career. The regions of Central America where Global Brigades provides aid are in dire need of assistance, and having the chance to help as a medical shadow and translator made me feel like I made good use of my time and gave back to the international community. It’s also encouraging to see people from different disciplines, from engineers to pre-health students, reflect the Institute’s mission to inspire change wherever they go, be it locally or across borders.” -- Rafael Ramos ’16, Biomedical Engineering, Former President of RPI Global Medical Brigades

Impact of Your Gift

Gifts will be allocated toward the medication chapter fund currently held by RPI Global Medical Brigades. Any additional funds will be allocated toward student travel. These funds will be used during the 2018 trip to either Panama, Nicaragua, or Honduras, and will serve as long-term savings for future brigades if enough is left over. These funds will also ensure that group members are able to spend more time preparing for their brigade through basic clinical, medicine, and Spanish workshops, as well as by volunteering locally at the Whitney M. Young Jr. Clinic in Troy, NY. Global Medical Brigades at RPI has become large enough for our overseas trips to be entirely Rensselaer volunteers, a huge accomplishment that demonstrates the impact and potential for growth of this club.

Check out a video of our 2016 trip to Nicaragua to see RPI Global Medical Brigades in action.

Why Support Us

Donating to Global Medical Brigades allows students from the Rensselaer community to continue to support Global Brigade’s mission in Central America.  The funds collected through this project will be used to pay for the medications to be used on this brigade, which total $1,500, and student travel expenses. These medications will be distributed to communities in need through medical and dental clinics, which will be run by Rensselaer volunteers and Global Brigades Staff.  These individuals become capable of not only interacting and treating underserved communities, but also empowering them to better their condition through public health workshops. This experience allows students to embrace the motto of this university, “Why not change the world?”

About the Organization

The RPI Chapter of Global Medical Brigades was established in 2010. In the past, the club has traveled to both Honduras and Panama twice.  Our brigades consist of dedicated Rensselaer students, doctors, pharmacists, and Global Brigade leaders all coming together to set up a mobile medical unit in an underserved community. For more information, please visit the RPI Global Medical Brigades website.
