“Cycling is a great way to have fun, stay active, and appreciate and explore the outdoors. Students shouldn’t miss out simply because they can’t access a bike.” - Jadyn Ide-Pech (Public Relations)
BARS aims to create a collection of bicycles ranging in discipline to be available for use by students for free and available for rent by the Troy community for a small fee. This would allow students and community members access to cycling no matter what monetary or transportation barriers they may face. It would also allow students to explore the many branches of cycling including; mountain biking, road cycling, and BMX. All of this would increase club membership and potentially participation in races, improving RPI Cycling’s reputation among collegiate cycling teams.
What You're Supporting
Many students on campus have expressed a desire to try cycling or to explore a new discipline of cycling, but they lack access to a bike. BARS strives to enable students to expand and pursue their interests, all while keeping active, learning about the mechanics of bicycles, and enjoying the outdoors.
Once underway, the project will support itself using money raised from the rental fee. The funds will be set aside to purchase more bikes and supplies for the program. The main goal of BARS is to increase the cycling community on and off-campus, as such accommodations will be made if monetary restrictions prevent rental payment.
To ensure the safety of the bikes and riders, the cost of locks and helmets must be included in the budget. An accountability system will be organized to ensure the return of used bikes. Regular maintenance on the bikes will be performed by team members to ensure they are safe and rideable.
We need to raise $8,000 in order to purchase 5 bikes of varying discipline, along with helmets and locks for the protection of rider and bike.
