Black History Month Trip to Washington DC

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

The Mission

The Black Students' Alliance promotes black cultural, intellectual, and social interest at Rensselaer and in the surrounding community. Above all, the Alliance uplifts the conscious awareness of the black student, politically, culturally, and intellectually, so that they can be empowered to champion the rights of black students and our community, and to be a guiding and uniting force for the black student on campus and the surrounding community. This can and shall be met by providing for cultural, political, and intellectual weapons, in the form of programs and events for black students at Rensselaer and the surrounding community.

During Presidents’ Day Weekend, we plan on taking a 3-night stay to Arlington, Virginia. The trip will include the National Mall and museums, a tour of the first Historically Black College/University, and visits to several historic memorials – including the Smithsonian Museum of African American History, the African Art Museum, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Memorial – in celebration of Black History Month.

What You're Supporting

This is a unique opportunity for students to interact with staff, faculty, and their peers on a type of guided retreat. As you can expect, the trip is in high demand. In 2018, we had well over 50 attendees, and this year we’ll certainly top that. Although our peers want to attend, the rates are still a bit high for them. We’ve worked hard with our advisor and tour operators to keep expenses down, but we still need a bit more assistance. Your support will help cover our transportation to and from DC, transportation while in DC, meals and hotel accommodations, and all entrance fees to programs. This years trip we lift campus on Friday, February 14th, 2020, and returned to campus on Monday, February 17, 2020. Any additional funds after the trip will go to supporting our trip for Spring 2020.

Who We Are

The Black Students' Alliance at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shall exist to allow the participation of all people in the promotion of black cultural, intellectual, and social interests at Rensselaer and in the surrounding community. Above all, the alliance shall serve: To uplift the conscious awareness of the black student politically, socially, and intellectually; to champion and ensure the rights of black students and our community; and to be a guiding and uniting force for black students on campus and the surrounding community.
