RPI TV: Equipment Upgrade 2019

“As a chemical engineering student, I have discovered so many invaluable lessons that I never would have learned from my normal coursework. Having more accessible and higher quality equipment will make our productions even more efficient and enjoyable for members, as well as for the student groups and community members that we work with.” - Elisabeth Schanz '21

The Mission

RPI TV teaches its members about the full television production process. This supports independent learning and communication skills, ultimately producing well-rounded students. Additionally, upgrading our equipment and streaming capabilities will provide our viewers in the Rensselaer community with a higher quality of footage. This will make it easier for alumni, students, and their families, to engage with RPI. We believe this improves overall interconnectedness within the campus community.

RPI TV represents the Rensselaer way of passionately learning, while producing work that enriches our community. We love providing these services and sincerely believe that meeting our goal would truly benefit the RPI community.

What You're Supporting

We currently use 1080p monitors in the control room for directing and replay. They are quite worn down from age and beginning to lose accuracy for color representation. This makes it very challenging to correct color temperature and iris. It would be extremely beneficial for us to upgrade these screens to 4K so that we are able to accurately display what the cameras are receiving and, more importantly, what they are sending to viewers. This would include a total of two 4K IPS monitors and one recording monitor.

As our control room continues to expand with the systems that better our production quality, it is becoming inefficient and difficult to be restricted to the use of members’ laptops. This is due to a combination of unreliable availability of software and long download times. To correct this, we would like to purchase a Dell broadcast laptop that will stay with our systems.

Who We Are

RPI TV, staffed completely by student volunteers, constantly works to provide excellent video services for the Rensselaer campus community. Our capacities include recording and archiving campus events, providing entertainment content, and making content available for students, alumni, and faculty. The overall impact we make in the Rensselaer community may be seen in the ways we interact with at least 20 different Union clubs and athletic teams. We have done work with Union groups, such as Sheer Idiocy, RPI Players, and RMA. Additionally, athletic productions include Men's Hockey, Women's Hockey, and ACHA Hockey. Other athletic affiliations include Football, Softball, Lacrosse, and Soccer.

Some specifically notable events include: Big Red Freakout!, coverage of all RPI a capella groups, coverage of RMA performances, coverage of the Phalanx tapping ceremony, coverage of Ballroom Dance competitions, President's Town Hall, ASPCA Filming, and the Lego League Robotics Competition.
